  1. Hi there, I am Jerry Taylor and I am taking this class for a couple of reasons – obviously for course credit, but also to understand how Christian thought has developed and how it varies from so much from person to person. Unfortunately, I will be missing the first two days of class because of conflict with state classes for teachers, and then a couple of days at the end of the course for a state teacher’s convention. Fortunately I will be in class for the all the juicy discussions in the middle of the class.

    See you in class!

    Jerry

  2. I'm Kent Johnsen! I am a senior at NSU as an education major and plan on graduating in May 2015. I'm interested in sports, music, and subjects in math, science, and history. I enjoy studying, working at my job, and overall just being a normal 20-something. I also have a strong faith in Christ and religious background, and one of the objectives I have for this course is to learn how to defend my faith from the people in the past. It goes hand-in-hand in the fact of misuse of doctrine makes me mad. This course also goes well with another class I took this summer through USD called "The Evolution/Creation Debate".

  3. My name is Matthew Peterson. I have been in school most of my life. I am interested in History and Literature. I love reading stories from throughout the centuries. I also enjoy running and playing music. I am interested in the Christian Apologetics course to strengthen my faith and have a ready answer for those who question my reasons for my hope.

  4. I am Mary Locken and I am a senior. I have a two year old named Jack and he takes up a majority of my time. In the summer I enjoy being outside and biking all around town with my son in the bike trailer.
As far as what makes me mad.. As a parent I have learned to be more patient so I try not to get worked up about the little things. I usually ask myself "is this worth getting mad about?" before I have a big freak out.
I am looking forward to this course because I don't know much about Christian Apologetics and hope to learn a lot.

  5. Greetings! I am Claire DeMilia. This class and an online class that I'm also taking this month are the last classes I need to take before officially graduating from NSU on August 1st with a B.S.Ed in Social Sciences. I am currently looking for a teaching position (preferably on the eastern half of the state), so if you hear of any openings, please let me know!

I thoroughly enjoy academics, and classes based on religion, especially Christianity, are particularly interesting to me. I am looking forward to getting into the "meat" of Christian apologetics for the first time in my educational career.

I love learning new skills, so I have more hobbies than I can count. I am a huge film/TV buff, and my favorite TV shows are the Star Trek series. I also enjoy theatre, music, and different crafting activities (knitting, scrapbooking, etc.). I am a novice ukulele player.

  6. Garrid Scott Baldwin here for my 6th Marmorstein class as a senior History Ed major; married with 2 school age kids. I like taking summer school courses because of the small class sizes. I didn’t take the class so much for the topic as it’s an upper level HIST elective, but I’ve taken a couple other religion classes before and enjoyed them.

  7. My name is Comfort Hauck. I taught for the U.S. Army on a base in Germany for the last 14 years but I retired a year ago and now I have the pleasure of taking classes that I want to take just for the fun and knowledge. I am one of those people who just like school - I always have, back when I was a student, then during my teaching career, and now as a student again. I just like to learn things. I am a Christian, and I am taking this class to sharpen my skills in answering people who have legitimate questions about Christianity or religion in general. I have a grandson who is 14 and he is starting to question his faith, with the kinds of questions that bother most people, like why there is evil in the world and why bad things happen to good people. I think these questions are reasonable and normal for thinking people, and it makes me mad when young people are made to feel that asking these questions is wrong, like "just shut up and believe."

  8. Hi, Chelvan Arunasalam here. Married with 2 kids, working in IT and a soccer coach. I enjoy family activities, sports, reading, movies, summer weather and activities. Not a big fan of winter. I hope this course will help me better present Christian ideas, tenets and precepts.

  9. Hey, I'm Jordan. I'm now a sophomore at NSU majoring in English, minoring in history. I'm currently in San Diego, California for the summer months and unfortunately won't be able to make it to any of the lectures, but I hope to atone for my absence with vitriol and ubiquity here on the blog. My pleasures include but are not limited to reading (typically fantasy literature), playing video games, and pursuing novelty. I am greatly saddened by what I view as the lethargy of the American masses, and, like everybody else in the world, I am a hypocrite.

I am taking this course because, while I am an unabashed atheist, I have always been fascinated by the logical sleight of hand used by religious figures to legitimize and secure their faith. Though it would be dishonest of me to not mention that I intend to discover the flaws in their reasoning.

I also love learning about history, and there's no denying that Christianity has left its mark there. Here's to an interesting few weeks?

  10. Hi, my name is Trent Dean. I am a Sophomore at NSU Majoring in history. I mostly specialize in military history, but am not above studying in anything that deals in the subject. I will very rarely show up to class as of right now I am trying to work to afford my next semester. I enjoy studying history, playing video games, and reading about adventures.

I'm taking this course to better understand the convictions people. I also find that the subject that most people seem like they need to justify is why they follow a religion.

  11. Hi, my name is Jaeden Shaving. I am a senior at NSU, working towards a History degree, a minor in Native Studies, and possibly a Lakota Language Certificate. After graduating I plan on going to grad school, to either continue studying history or to get a Secondary Education degree to teach at the high school level.

If I'm not working or doing homework, I can usually be found reading books on Native American history or spending time with my family. I enjoy traveling to visit friends and family and watching good movies.

I'm taking this class because I am a Christian, and have felt for a while that I need to learn more about my faith. I know what I believe, but I am not very good at explaining it or defending it. I enjoy history and religious studies so this class seemed like it'd be a good time.

  12. Hello! My name is Caleb Schlekeway! After this Summer semester and coming Fall semester, I will officially be graduating with my bachelor's in History, a minor in Coaching, and a minor in Religious Studies. After I finish up, I plan on going into ministry - whether that's college, high school, or youth ministry depends on where God leads and calls!

When I'm not working one of my jobs, I like to be active and outdoors, especially in the summer! I love to workout, play frisbee golf, go hiking and hammocking, and I love to read!
Concerning what makes me mad, I honestly and genuinely try my best to not let anything make me mad. But when I do get mad, my siblings are always good at getting under each-others' skin haha! And bad drivers - I have a slight case of road rage at times lol

I'm taking this class for a multitude of reasons. The biggest ones are my desire to learn more about my faith and how to defend it, its part of my minor, and I really find information like this inherently interesting! I don't have any specific expectations for this class other than to learn more than what I already know!

    1. So good to have you in another class, Caleb. I hope the material proves both interesting and useful. Particularly with the material later in the course, I think you'll find plenty of ideas useful in youth ministry.

  13. Hello all, my name is Casey Trowbridge. I am in this class because Art was good enough to offer me a chance to participate as a guest which came about because I posted on Facebook about my interest in apologetics because of what we are called to do in 1 Peter 3:15.

Over the past year or so of studying, my biggest areas of interest as a Christian have turned out to be apologetics and prophecy. Over the past couple of months, apologetics has really moved to the top of the list. I've been reading books by J. Warner Wallace and Frank Turek among others. As I do have a love for history, when Art offered me this opportunity I jumped at it because I do love learning.

I have a lot of interests from reading (both fiction [thrillers] and nonfiction [I seem to love books about how businesses work or fail but biographies, history, and other genres as well]), writing, watching sports (I'm a big baseball fan [go Braves] but enjoy many other sports from basketball and football to MMA and boxing), I also enjoy technology, watching movies and TV (I have a fondness for animation and old sitcoms) and even cook from time to time.

I'm looking forward to learning with you all!

    1. So glad you can join us, Casey. I'm not sure how interactive the blog format is going to be. The last time I taught the course, I had face-to-face as well as online students, and we spent class time on the posts. No face-to-face students this summer, but i hope there will be some interaction on the blog.

  14. Hello, my name is Isaac Olson. I run track at Northern, and I will be getting a history education degree this coming spring as well as a minor in coaching. I love reading as well as hanging out with teammates as well as friends.
In my free time I like to keep myself active. One of my favorite past times is to lift and workout. I honest don't get mad a lot it's just not in my nature but I would say what makes me mad or upset is when people decide to be late for things.
One of the main reasons I'm taking this course other than for credit is because I took world religion with Marmorstein, and I'm really interested in this class because I want to learn more about my faith and what even apologetics even is. I'm very excited to learn what this class is and do well in not only the class but as a Christian myself.

  15. I'm glad you enjoyed that early church class. It's fun to teach. I do think you'll find this a nice follow up to early church.

  16. Hey everyone! My name is Kristin Johnson and this is my third Marmorstein class. Will I survive it? We shall see!

Some of my interests include gaming (mostly Xbox), reading, riding horse when I can, cooking/baking, crocheting, watching movies, seeing my family, friends, and boyfriend, and of course, sleeping. (Naps are very good for you)

The one thing I really enjoy besides my hobbies/interests is gardening/caring for plants. I currently have a big jade plant, an aloe vera, a cactus, some chives, some mint chocolate tea, a voodoo plant, and many other plants growing.

Something that makes me really mad is when people do not use proper English. I get that English is a hard language, but please use it correctly.

I am taking this class since it sounded interesting to me, and because it allows my schedule to open up a bit in the fall so I don't have to take another Usitalo class...

    :)

  17. Hello! My name is Regina Chase and I am a History Education major. Some of the things that I enjoy and am interested in include history, museums, archives, and my dogs.

As far as things that make me mad...That's an easy one. I can't stand it when my space is unclean or untidy. A cluttered space I think results in a cluttered mind. Haha!

I am taking this course because I thought it sounded interesting and I am trying to finish up my degree so I can graduate in the fall :)
